The conditions for the approval of temporary residence depend on the visa regime in effect with the country of citizenship whose passport the foreigner used to enter the Republic of Serbia. On this occasion, we will explain two cases of residence approval:
- You have a long-stay visa, visa D, and you want to continue staying in the Republic of Serbia;
- You have an approved temporary residence permit and wish to extend your permit.
If you are staying in Serbia temporarily, with or without a visa, in accordance with the visa regime, and wish to obtain temporary residence, we advise you to visit My Guide to Entry, Visas and Residence and to select the option “Longer period (up to 36 months)” when asked about the length of stay. This will provide you with information on the requirements for temporary residence.
How to obtain approved temporary residence with a long-term visa, visa D?
If you have a valid visa D or a valid temporary residence permit, and you want to continue to stay in Serbia for a maximum of 3 years, you need to submit an application for a temporary residence permit. The request must be submitted during the legal stay in the Republic of Serbia.
If you have a valid visa D, you can apply for a temporary residence permit on the same basis as for a visa D. You can read more about temporary residence for foreign citizens who want to stay in the Republic of Serbia after the visa D expires here.
How to extend a temporary residence permit, i.e. a single permit
If you have been granted a temporary residence permit, i.e. a single permit, you can extend your permit if you intend to extend your stay in the Republic of Serbia. The request for extension of temporary residence, i.e. single permit, is submitted no earlier than three months, and no later than the expiration of the previously approved temporary residence, i.e. issued permit. The request must be submitted in a timely manner, rather than waiting until the last day od the legal stay.
Temporary residence is first granted for a period of time that is calculated starting from the date of submission of the request, and for a maximum period of up to three years, depending on the reason for the stay and the attached documentation.
If you submit a timely request for the approval, i.e. extension of temporary residence, you can stay in the Republic of Serbia until the end of the administrative procedure.
